Antonio Marras made his Haute Couture debut under his own name in 1996 and entered Milan’s ready-to-wear scene in 1999. In 2001 he was awarded the Francesca Alinovi Prize, now known as the Alinovi Daolio Prize, and in 2003 the Museo d’Arte Contemporanea di Sassari dedicated to him the exhibition Antonio Marras. Alongside his work in fashion (the total number of his runway shows is difficult to calculate, due to their continuity and the variety of presentation formats), Marras has been involved in numerous exhibitions and cultural projects. In 2003 he curated Il Racconto della Forma, his first exhibition, and subsequently launched in Alghero the project Trama Doppia: a series of annual exhibitions in which he engages each time in dialogue with a different artist. In 2006 the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo hosted the photographic exhibition Antonio Marras, dieci anni dopo. In 2009 he designed the costumes for Luca Ronconi’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In 2011 he took part in the Venice Biennale with an installation in the Italian Pavilion entitled Archivio Provvisorio. In September 2012 he curated the exhibition design at MART in Rovereto for Lea Vergine’s exhibition Un altro tempo. In December of the same year, together with Lucia Pescador, he was featured in the exhibition Vedetti, credetti.
In 2013 he was awarded an Honorary Degree in Visual Arts by the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera. In 2014 he participated in the group exhibition IOèTE, held in Milan and London. In 2016 the Triennale di Milano dedicated to him the major retrospective Antonio Marras: Nulla dies sine linea. Vita, diari e appunti di un uomo irrequieto. In 2017 he made his debut as a theatre director with his first stage production, Mio cuore, io sto soffrendo, later presented in 2019 at PAC Milan. In 2020 he presented the exhibition Memorie dal sottosuolo at the Museo della Ceramica in Mondovì.
In 2021 the Italian Cultural Institute in New York, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Italy in New York, presented his performative and installation-based project Antonio Marras. Su per e Antiche Scale. In 2022 he designed the costumes for Edipo Re – Una Favola Nera by Bruni/Frongia at Teatro dell’Elfo in Milan, and in 2025, with the same directors and at the same theatre, he designed the costumes for Amadeus by Peter Shaffer. Also in 2022 he created Tutti i Nomi di d’Io, an installation and performance at the Filatoio di Caraglio.
In 2023 Questi miei fantasmi saw Marras intervene in Naples with an aerial and luminous installation composed of 200 lanterns and 150 Orfanelle, installed in the spaces of FOQUS – Fondazione Quartieri Spagnoli. In 2025 the Forte Malatesta in Ascoli Piceno hosted the solo exhibition Antonio Marras – Vedere per credere. L’ombra di Cecco. Also in 2025, Marras made his cinema debut with Motel Jacaranda, his first short film.
