Kaarina Kaikkonen is a renowned contemporary Finnish artist, celebrated for her large-scale installations and sculptures. Born in Iisalmi, Finland, on 1952, Kaarina Kaikkonen lives and works in Helsinki. A 1983 graduate of the Helsinki Academy of Fine Arts, during her formative years the artist focused on studying the expressive potentialof everyday objects that have been neglected or that have fallen into disuse.
What makes Kaarina Kaikkonen’s art unique is precisely her creative use of recycled materials, particularly second-hand clothing. Using old garments and found objects, the artist creates installations involving public spaces and architecture, transforming environments into evocative and evocative settings. Since the early years of her career, Kaikkonen has focused on creating large-scale installations and sculptures involving public spaces and architecture. In terms of major awards, she was presented with the Finland Prize for Art in 2001, while in 2013, the Order of the Lion of Finland awarded her the title of First Class Knight. Kaikkonen has also received international awards, such as the Audience Award at the Den Haag Sculptuur in the Netherlands in 2004 and an Honorable Mention at the 11th Cairo Biennale in Egypt in 2009.
